Glamour, defined.

One word can have so many different meanings. A word not only represents it’s meaning in different contexts, but it also brings with it a multitude of perceptions, connotations, and personal memories.

It’s no wonder that communication is one of the hardest skills to master. When speaking to others, you not only have to consider the words you are using, but also how the recipient is interpreting those words. Their interpretation can differ, depending on their own life experiences, understanding, and internalized values.

My personal interpretation of the word “glamour” and “glamorous” conjures visions of vintage Hollywood movie stars draped in couture, mansions with grand entry halls, and opulent chandeliers dripping with jewels. I also think about more modern day uses of the word, such as Glamour magazine and high-end fashion worn on the catwalk or to movie premieres.

Words can also carry feeling, and when I hear “glamour” I feel a sense of confidence and assuredness. It carries a persona of timeless elegance, grace, and a sense of mystery.

Merriam-Webster defines “glamour” as a “magic spell”, my favorite definition. It reminds me of the song, “I Put a Spell on You” and the power that a person can have over another – in some cases, without saying a single word.

It also defines the word as “an exciting, often illusory romantic attractiveness”, using the example “the glamour of Hollywood”. Without a doubt, we remember the leading ladies of the Hollywood Golden Age and still emulate the style of Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe. The movie stars of this era possessed qualities that shouldn’t be lost – allure, wit, and mystique. This is not reserved for celebrities; we can continue to be inspired by these iconic figures.
